The Lesson of Living With Intention Workbook Excerpt

Living with intention is often misunderstood as living with white-knuckle will power, creating a to-do list every day, or simply “luck” or superstition. The reality is that the results you get from will power, to-do lists and "luck" are a poor substitute for the sense of abundance that comes from living with intention and mindfulness. That abundance doesn't depend on any magic outside of you.

One of my clients—a woman named Megan—puts it this way, "If you were to ask me the one thing I'd like others to know about working with Deborah, I would say that learning about mindfulness and about living with intention changed my life.”

Like many women, Megan easily steps into a caretaker role and, in fact, her business was an "enabler" of that behavior. If people needed help and were having a hard time, she would take on their energy and exhaust herself trying to fix it for them. 

Over a period of about four years, one challenge followed another until Megan was drained, exhausted, angry, sad and at risk of returning to the eating disorder she had beaten on her own. 

"I had no idea how much I needed help," said Megan. “I hadn't realized how much I'd put my own needs on the shelf every day for the needs of others."

Through our coaching sessions, Megan discovered the freedom to be found in living with intention. Conceptually, setting an intention is very different from setting goals. Setting an intention is not about a short- or long-term goal that you want to achieve at some future time. Instead, you set your intention to align your energy with a path or practice that focuses on how you are 'being' in the present moment. The good news is that setting an intention and living mindfully are things that anyone can do. No magic, quackery or pseudoscience required.

Today Megan uses mindfulness to stay attuned to her intention. Instead of living with anxiety and a need for perfection, she has a simple three-step process—stop, check in, reaffirm—that she can use throughout the day to maintain alignment with that day’s intention.
